NMMC NEWSPAPER STALLS – YET ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF WASTED PUBLIC FUNDS

With a view to inform the citizens about domestic and world news, newspaper stands have been installed on the footpaths by spending money from NMMC’s corporators funds. But today these stands are lying unattended, due to lack of newspapers. On one side people are demanding its removal and on other side former corporators are requesting to handover the stands either to them or some Mandal for conducting its operations. In order to keep the city updated with the current affairs and news that happened around the world, NMMC had installed newspaper stands on footpaths in the year 2002-03. For which, NMMC had allowed the corporators to spend money from their corporator’s funds and many of the city’s footpaths saw newspaper stalls being put up with the respective corporator’s name on it. While the corporators were the ruling front, all was well but with ruling front gone these stands were left unattended with no newspapers. Now instead of servicing the people, it has become a nuisance for residents as they create congestion. The residents have demanded that these unattended stalls be removed. Even corporators agree that many a times these stalls are a trouble for locals. Former corporator Raju Shinde made a shocking confession stating that that often anti social elements misuse these stalls. Today, these newspaper stands have become a tool for publicizing one’s political party killing the main purpose that these stands should serve for the masses.
