NMMC PUBLIC HEALTH DEPT.’S MOBILE TOILET BLOCKS BECOMES ANOTHER STAIN

toilet-blocks-1A visit to Ambedkar Nagar also exposed the failure of NMMC Public Health Dept. toilet block built to discourage open-air defecation at Turbhe. The toilet block standing at Turbhe, is kept locked most of the day making it yet another example of public funds wasted. The toilet block was the brainchild of NMMC Public Health Dept., built at a cost of Rs. 5 Lakhs. When the toilet block was built, the dept. officials boasted that the project took them two months and was made to discourage open-air defecation system. It may be recalled that in this year’s budget, NMMC has proposed an open-air defecation- free city with Rs 7.20 Crores for toilets. At that time, PHD’s Addtl. City Engineer Surinder Patil had informed us that the agency of the area that has been appointed to maintain toilets would do the maintenance of this toilet block as well. However, today the toilet block at Turbhe is another example of a failed NMMC projects. Today, the toilet block stands locked while locals have again switched to open-air defecation.
