The NMMC Standing Committee approved three major proposals pertaining to the Turbhe landfill site. The NMMC Standing Committee approved three proposals pertaining to the Turbhe landfill site. One was to develop a Leachate Treatment Plant which will treat the garbage before it is released underground. The construction would be carried on a 44,000 sq m plot for Rs 3.46 crore. The leachate coming from garbage has heavy metals, high level of biochemical oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand. These components can pollute the underground water, creek water and water coming from other natural resources like wells. The standing committee also sanctioned Air Monitoring Station proposal at landfill site which will monitor the increase or decrease in air elements like sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, ammonia, carbon monoxide and others. NMMC already has two such air stations at Vashi and Airoli residential nodes and regular report from these stations are sent to Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). Similarly, report from this station will also be sent to MPCB. On the same site, the corporation proposes to construct fourth cell of Turbhe landfill site, in which the garbage can be stored from 2011. With cameraperson Vinayak Dalvi, Sana Warsia for NMTV News.
