NMMC TO HAVE ITS OWN CIVIC POLICE FORCE TO CHECK ENCROACHMENT

In a rather much needed step, the NMMC will soon have its own civic police force to check encroachment in the city. The growing encroachment in Navi Mumbai has become one of the biggest challenges that the municipal corporation faces. With most encroachment taking place with blessings of local politicians for vote banks, the situation in Navi Mumbai is going beyond control. One of the major problems that any corporation faces for conducting encroachment drives is getting the police personnel to do the job. To bring about a solution on this front, the state government floated the plan of establishing civic police force for every corporation. The NMMC too floated a proposal in this regard in last month’s general body meeting that was approved by the members. The NMMC’s Civic Police Force will have 78 police personnel. NMMC’s demolition head N T Jadhav shared the urgent need of an independent police set-up for encroachment drives. Unlike earlier when the police could not book the violators, the Civic Police Force will have the powers under the Mumbai Police Act and ARTP Act to register FIRs and complaints. The state government is also considering a proposal that establish independent courts for hearing the cases of encroachments. Each such court will have 2-3 corporations under them. These steps, the demolition men of corporations across cities will help control encroachment completely but will it be so? Well, the city will find out.
