The ire and frustration of residents at Gothivali in Rabale broke loose when hundreds of them attacked the workers of NMMC water department who has come in the node to disconnect their water lines. More than 20,000 residents of Gothivali in Rabale were shocked to receive notices from CIDCO, which stated that their houses were illegal and would be demolished. The evacuation notice angered the residents so much that when NMMC’s junior engineers of the water department came to their area to disconnect the water connection, all hell broke loose and hundreds of residents attacked the two engineers, beating them. The residents questioned that when they had all the required documents, why were their homes being called illegal. The residents said that they had even voted for the last elections, then why were they suddenly being called as illegal residents. The attack on NMMC engineers should be a lesson for government offices who fail to check illegal constructions in their initial stages and then wake up from their slumber carrying out demolition drives to check encroachments.
