The transport committee of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has approved a new experiment in public road transport to make it more attractive and enhance revenue for the transport undertaking. After its successful venture of Volvo aC buses, NMMT is set to provide nutritional water to commuters now. The standing Committee recently approved the transport manager’s proposal to permit Triveni Enterprises to sell mineral water, mobile recharge, books, magazines, snacks and cold drinks in the air-conditioned Volvo buses of NMMT on an experimental basis for three months. The undertaking will be paid 10% of the MRP by the said contractor and 4% of this revenue will go to the conductor as incentive for generating sale of the said products. The approved proposal has estimated revenue of Rs. 66,150/- every month for the undertaking from sale of sport drink costing Rs. 25/- each in 5 AC buses of which the incentive for the conductors would be Rs. 18900/-. The revenue from 20 AC buses is estimated at Rs.3.18 lakhs for the undertaking and Rs. 90,720/- for the conductors, from the said sale. Very soon, the transport body would also include additional buses in its fleet as it has received the go ahead from the state. Over the concern of Nerul residents not able to avail the AC Volvo bus service, this is what he had to say. NMMC has pioneered the first scientific solid waste management, advanced STP, scientific landfill of dumping ground by Municipal bodies in the country and this experiment in public road transport too could also be a trend setter.
