NMMT BUS DRIVERS HOLD COMMUTERS AT RANSOM OVER A PETTY ISSUE

NMMT-1Traffic at Koparkhairane came to a standstill for more than three hours when Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport staffers came on streets and held a ‘chakka jam’ after the driver of a private bus assaulted a NMMT bus driver. The incident occurred at around 8.30 am at the Gulab Dairy chowk. Deepak Patil, driver of the NMMT bus was beaten by the private bus driver after he asked the private bus driver why he was overtaking. Irked over this, the private bus driver got violent and started beating the NMMT driver. Patil was hit hard by the private bus driver and was later taken to NMMC hospital. Following this, the drivers, conductors and other staff of NMMT came on road and held a ‘chakka jam’. As a result of this, no NMMT bus plied for almost three hours till the police and senior NMMT officials intervened and assured the drivers and conductors that they will get justice. Papan Das (32), the driver of the private bus and Raju Das (22), the cleaner have been arrested by the Koparkhairane police. NMMT transport manager Jitendra Papalkar has assured that strict measures would be taken and that new parking lots for the NMMT buses would be planned so that the parking problem of the buses is solved. The union leader of NMMT employees told that they have forwarded the issue of their safety to the management and they have been assured of strict action against the driver. However, no one can deny that NMMT drivers and conductors often show high handed behavior, misbehave and drive rashly on roads. This has been an issue that the management has assured to tackle time and again but have failed. Even in this case, commuters were disappointed that NMMT drivers stopped services over a petty squabble on a working day. With cameraperson Vinayak Dalvi, Vrushali Chitre for NMTV News.
