NMMC has finally taken cognizance of the illegal mobile towers in the city and has started a drive to send notices to cellular companies to either obtain permission else face action. The action comes in wake of a NMTV report that brought to the forefront how cellular companies have erected mobile towers across the city without NMMC’s approval. Taking note of an exclusive report that your channel had aired earlier on the illegal mobile towers that many cellular service companies had erected in the city without proper permission, NMMC’s town planning department had conducted a survey and found that only 87 mobile towers in the city were legal amongst the 260 that have been erected in Navi Mumbai. In the wake, NMMC has finally issued a notice to all the mobile companies who have erected illegal towers in the city. They have ordered to either obtain permission by paying Rs 10000 for each mobile tower or NMMC’s anti-encroachment department would raze down the illegal towers for absence of mandatory permissions. Some of the examples of illegal towers can be seen at Big Splash at Sector 17, Vashi, Bharti Airtel’s cellular tower on Balaji Apartments at Turbhe, Bharti Airtel’s cellular tower at Grehtum CHS at Vashi and Vodafone mobile tower at the banking complex at Sec – 19 C Vashi. These are just three of the hundreds mobile towers erected on city buildings with NMMC permissions. Although some of the cellular companies have challenged the NMMC administration’s decision, a major mobile tower demolition drive is likely to happen in the city.
