With the nomination withdrawal deadline over, the final list of candidates contesting the elections is out. 470 candidates will fight the elections. With 133 candidates opting out, 470 aspirants will now fight it out for the 88 seats in NMMC polls on April 11. A total of 133 of the 221 rebel and independent candidates withdrew their nominations on the last day, for the NMMC elections slated for April 11, leaving 470 candidates in the electoral race for the 88 wards of the city. A large number of independents were expected to withdraw and accordingly 60 per cent of them withdrew their nominations. Thirty candidates, which is the highest number of withdrawals, took place from Belapur node from where 84 candidates had filed nominations. From Nerul, 21 candidates withdrew their nominations making the contestants in the fray only 65. From Vashi 15 candidates opted out of the electoral fray leaving 75 candidates in the battle. From Koparkhairane 18 out of 68 candidates backed out, as a result 50 remain in the fray, the last day saw 10 withdrawals. In Ghansoli, 19 of 89 candidates withdrew from the electoral race, while in Turbhe 10 out of 62 candidates backed out. Of the 63 candidates 50 will contest in Airoli node and 54 off 61 will contest in Digha. All the political parties and candidates were waiting for the final list so as to formulate their election strategies. Full fledged campaigning is expected to begin now.
