Yet another NMMC General Body was adjourned due to a pandemonium created by the corporators over a petty issue. In the midst of all the chaos, all the proposals of the ruling NCP party and Shiv Sena were approved while the Congress were busy raising slogans. When Congress corporator Ramakant Mhatre’s proposal related to the penalty levied over property tax in the city was presented at the NMMC General Body meet, it was approved by the house. However, when he demanded a discussion on the subject, Mayor Manisha Bhoir set aside the demand stating that the proposal has been passed. Congress leader Namdeo Bhagat urged the Mayor to let the Congress speak as they had also proposed a discussion. When the she continued to ignore the demand, the Congress corporators created a pandemonium in the general body raising slogans against the Mayor and shouting. The women corporators of NCP came forward to protest this act and soon both the sides were close to holding each other’s collars. The Congress corporators went to the extent of tearing the agenda sheets and throwing it on the Mayor. As the Congress corporators continued shouting and raising slogans, the house passed all the resolutions of the ruling NCP party and Shiv Sena party, while all the Congress party’s resolutions were left out due to the mayhem. The Mayor disallowing the Congress corporators to speak was an obvious attempt to not give them a chance to speak against NCP Navi Mumbai Supremo Ganesh Naik. It may be recalled that the Guardian Minister during municipal elections had promised that there will be no increase in taxes for the next 20 years but several areas in the city are being charged higher property taxes off late. The Congress party wanted to take the Minister’s case on this promise that has been broken, which was turned down by the Mayor. But observers feel that no matter what the issue, the Congress corporators should not have disrespected the Mayor’s chair and the dignity of a woman by their act of throwing torn agenda sheets on her. Navi Mumbai News spoke to both sides. It is really unfortunate that in the political battle between the two sides, the national anthem was not give due respect. The house started singing the anthem, stopped mid way, passed resolutions and then again sang the national anthem to adjourn the meeting.
