Panvel becomes the ninth municipal corporation with government notification

The Maharashtra state government on Monday issued notification to upgrade the Panvel Municipal Council (PMC) to corporation, comprising 68 villages, including Kharghar, Kalamboli, New Panvel and Kamothe nodes. The proposal was sent to the state government in the first week of May.

The process of up gradation will take around 5 to 6 months and if there is no opposition, the by the next year formation of corporation will be completed. As per the notification, if anyone has problem or issues with the upgrading, he or she can submit their grievances with adequate reasons to the district collector of Raigad district within 30 days of issue of notification or by June 16.

The state had constituted a study committee to scrutinise all the possibilities and to look into different parameters of giving a status of corporation to Panvel.

The committee comprised Konkan divisional commissioner, Cidco MD and collectors of Thane and Raigad as its members. Chief officer of PMC worked as member secretary of this committee. Considering that boundaries of Panvel are extending and new projects like NAINA are shaping up in the area, Panvel MLA Prashant Thakur had demanded that PMC be upgraded to a corporation. Panvel is expanding and various projects like the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) are coming in this belt. “We have been demanding for the up gradation of council to corporation for a long time to speed up development work in the region. And, we met state chief minister and drew his attention towards the needs of up gradation of the council to corporation,” said Prashant Thakur, MLA, Panvel.

According to an official, “The proposal was sent to the state. The committee formed by the state was entrusted to look into the road map to upgrade existing council into corporation. Study the present jurisdiction of council and the area that will come under its control after it becomes a corporation, sources of income for the council, infrastructure planning and development plan of the region.”

Now 68 villages in the taluka will become a part of the corporation, besides the nodes of Kharghar, Kalamboli, New Panvel and Kamothe. As per 2011 census, the population of 68 villages is 5,95,295.

The population of Panvel has grown by leaps and bounds in the last decade and so, the need to upgrade the council to corporation is being felt. The general body of Panvel Council) has already cleared proposal to upgrade to corporation.
