A Panvel resident is one of the men who died after the bulk carrier Giant Step sank in stormy weather there. There was sad news for the Thomas family of Panvel, who were informed that the body of 46-year-old William Thomas had been found. Sixteen men, including the ship’s Indian captain, were saved, two died and eight went missing. Mitsui OSK Lines owns the ship. The ship had left in August from Mumbai and was destined to go to Australia. The ship was carrying 190000 tons of iron. Of the 26 on board, 25 were from India. William Thomas was a resident of National CHS at Panvel. The news of William Thomas has made the city sombre, even as search for many who are still missing is still underway.
