Peter Mukerjea on Thursday admitted that his marriage to Indrani was not going too well and that they had frequent fights over both domestic and professional matters.
Under sustained interrogation by the Mumbai police on Thursday, during which cops told him about bank accounts and fixed deposits held by Indrani without his knowledge, Mukerjea said it was unlikely their relationship would survive the ongoing upheaval.
Mukerjea, who was questioned for nearly 10 hours at the Khar police station on Wednesday, arrived for the second round of interrogation at 11.17 on Thursday. He had not left the police station at the time of filing this report.
Indrani, arrested last week for allegedly killing Sheena Bora, her daughter from an earlier marriage whom she would introduce as her sister in social circles, too was questioned separately at the same police station.
Distancing himself from Indrani’s alleged involvement in the murder, Mukerjea said he has been shocked by the details of events of April 24, 2013, the day cops believe Sheena was strangled to death in a rented car and her body set on fire in the forests of Pen in Raigad district.
Mukerjea, who sources said is paying Indrani’s legal expenses, had refused to be questioned in her presence when he was brought to the Khar police station for the first time. On Thursday too, while the husband and wife were in the same building, he did not request to see her.
Police sources said apart from Mukerjea and Indrani’s ten joint accounts, including three NRI and one overseas, Indrani on her own operated at least four accounts, including two overseas, which Peter had no idea existed.
In Mumbai and Delhi, the couple have accounts in at least five banks –HDFC, ICICI, Standard Chartered, City, and SBI. Investigations have revealed that Indrani had opened separate accounts in these banks without informing Mukerjea. Indrani also holds around Rs 70 lakh in FDs for which the sole nominee is her youngest daughter Vidhie.
During his questioning, Mukerjea, who headed Star India before launching INX Media with Indrani, was unable to answer several questions on their business dealings and said he depended entirely on her in matters business. He will be questioned again on Friday, when he will be expected to fill the gaps.
