While the MCGM administration had decided to completely ban the usage of polythene bags, with no proper implementation, the ban has not been successful in its purpose, reports Hansraj Kanaujia. It maybe recalled that in the year 2006, the then Mayor Datta Dalvi had imposed the ban on usage of polythene bags in the city. While the rules are still there, the administration has failed to implement them effectively. Speaking in this regard, BJP leader Ashish Shelar informed that the MCGM administration works according to the BMC Rules and regulations. He said that while earlier there was a ban on polythene bags lesser than 50 microns, the administration had failed to successfully implement even this ban. Targeting the state government, Ashish Shelar said that it is the responsibility of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board to keep a check on the polythene manufacturing companies. He informed that till date, MCGM administration has booked 7328 cases and collected Rs 3-4 crores as fine. Ashish Shelar said that the action taken against the usage of polythene bags was not as aggressive as it should have been. Plastics are the main cause of choking up of city drains and hence there is an immediate need to ban its usage, he said. With cameraperson Vinayak Dalvi, Hansraj Kanaujia for NMTV News.
