While the MCGM might be lying low as far as its treasury is concerned, it has some reason to cheer. The MCGM which is used to more brickbats than bouquets, earned Mumbai the Best Mega City Award. The Prime Minister Manmohan Singh presented this award to the civic body recently. While the MCGM has been receiving a lot of flak for failing to tackle water crisis along with other issues, has now got some reason to cheer. The Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has presented the Best Mega City award to the civic body for implementing various reforms to improve its governance system. These changes were suggested by the Centre as conditions for the sanction of funds under the Jawaharalal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, meant for the upgrade of infrastructure. The MCGM is one of the first cities to introduce a telescopic rate structure for water consumption and the civic body has also started metering all water connections, which will take five year to complete. Besides introducing e-governance, the MCGM has also helped Mumbai to be ahead of other metros in implementing infrastructure schemes.
