PNB fraud accused Mehul Choksi became a Antiguan citizen long before CBI filed its chargesheet against him. According to a Times of India report, there are 28 other Indians who were granted nationality since 2014.
Antigua and Barbuda permits dual citizens within two schemes and as it provides visa-free access to 132 countries and freedom from extradition.
Antigua is not the only country that fugitive rich Indians like Mehul Choksi can simply “buy” citizenship for. The Caribbean is a popular hotspot for people seeking so-called citizenship-by-investment. In return for investing in the country’s infrastructure and development, anyone can get a second passport and citizenship – without any need to have been born or even spent any time there.
It is one way these Caribbean islands fund their development, and the process takes just a few months. The authorities in Antigua have communicated to the ED that Mehul Choksi arrived in the country this month and was given an Antiguan passport. The information has been sent in response to a ‘diffusion notice’ issued against Choksi through the Interpol.
