POOR QUALITY OF FOOD RAISES ALARM IN MUNICIPAL SCHOOL AT TURBHE STORES

_food---1In a recent expose, the students studying in municipal schools in Turbhe store are allegedly given rotten mid day meals. The case has exposed how corruption reeks in the crores of rupees spent by NMMC in the so called Health Diet schemes for students. Every year, NMMC spends crores of rupees in the name of providing healthy mid day meals to the students of municipal schools. However, this scheme of NMMC has come under the scanner with allegations of corruption. This is not the first time that it has been exposed that the contractors for distributing mid day meals in municipal schools in nexus with the officials provide sub-standard food to the students. One such incident came into light at a municipal school in Turbhe Stores where allegedly the students were provided with rotten food. The NMMC school No.22 has a total 460 students. The school is till the VII standard where the students are provided with sweets that have gone stale and sub-standard mid day meals. Even kindergarten children are distributed the same sub-standard food. It is a well known fact that just for vested interests of a few, contractors purchase low quality food items. The carrier of the food informed that he came from Govandi and that the food was cooked and packaged in Matunga. The contract for supplying food to this school is assigned to ‘Cheda Company’. It would be a wait and watch to see whether the local corporator of the area takes up the matter with NMMC or not and whether the corporation penalizes the contractor.
