There is a need of better coordination, planning and above all need to change the leadership in Navi Mumbai to make the Congress stronger, says Navi Mumbai Congress strongman Santosh Shetty.. It may be recalled that prior to elections, in a public rally State Revenue Minister Narayan Rane had advised Congress corporators of Navi Mumbai to stop criticizing other parties and leaders and let their work speak for them. Despite the message being loud and clear, the corporators of Navi Mumbai paid no heed to it and faced the consequences of it by losing in municipal elections. However there were two corporators who did not take the advice of Narayan Rane lightly and won the elections with their work like Santosh Shetty and Dashrath Bhagat. Santosh Shetty says that had all his colleagues who lost in municipal polls done ward work, they would not have had to face defeats. Santosh Shetty and his wife Anita Shetty’s victories attain significance as the couple have won the election against another strong couple of NCP – former Dy. Mayor Shashikant Birajdar and Saroj Birajdar. With big names of the Congress like Namdeo Bhagat, Ramakant Mhatre, Shashikant Bhoir and Avinash Lad losing the elections badly, the victory of Dashrath Bhagat and the Shettys helped Congress salvage some pride. Now party high commands are thinking about changing the leadership of Navi Mumbai Congress. It doesn’t come as a surprise that there are speculations that Santosh Shetty might take charge as Congress Chief. Ask him that his name is doing rounds as the next Navi Mumbai Congress District Chief and Santosh Shetty says that if the party gives him the responsibility, he will handle it. We also spoke to him on the poll debacle of the party. Shetty says that had the senior Congress Ministers come down on the battleground of the polls, the performance would have been better. He says that had party seniors like Gurudas Kamat, Murli Deora, Suresh Shetty and Naseem Khan come to Navi Mumbai, the results would have been different. He says that had Narayan Rane been the election in-charge for Navi Mumbai, they would have performed better. Accepting that NCP worked better as a team under Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik, he said that the Congress was divided. He too agreed with the Chief Minister Ashok Chavan that there was a need to change the local leadership of the Navi Mumbai Congress. For the first time speaking in tune with Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik, Shetty said that even they will follow the policy of “Congress for all” in Navi Mumbai.
