It might become difficult to allow any new flights into and out of Mumbai soon, given the congestion at the existing international airport and delays in building a new one at Navi Mumbai. That is what Union Aviation Minister Praful Patel has rapped the Environment Minister for delay in the Navi Mumbai Airport. Slamming the Environment Ministry for delaying clearances to the Navi Mumbai project, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel has said that they are reaching a point where they have to think that new flights be permitted or not. After current upgradation is over, Mumbai International Airport’s peak capacity would reach 40 million passengers annually, but more is needed. Praful Patel said the objections raised by the Ministry of Environment and Forests over the Navi Mumbai project were beyond his comprehension. He said and I quote, “I do not understand their objections. We can’t be overly obsessive about environmental issues. We can’t give priority to 50-100 acres of degradation over a large infrastructure project,” unquote. It may be recalled that Environment minister Jairam Ramesh has raised concerns over the Navi Mumbai Intl. Airport project that will destroy about 400 acres of forest. Bureau report – NMTV News.
