Kandhari’s was a tale of rags to riches. He started as a wedding photographer who ventured into construction in late 1990. He went on construct plush residential towers across Navi Mumbai and had completed several projects successfully. Industry sources say that he had run into a rough situation in the past couple of years due to over trading. According to the source, at least a dozen projects of Swaraj are in various stages of in completion in the peripheral areas like Dronagiri, Ulwe and Taloja, and the developer has been relegated to the sidelines in the local business circles in the recent past.

The Sanpada police discovered Kandhari’s diary in a cupboard next to his bed, and found three sheets of paper with a few lines written on them: ‘Agar aadmi ek kaam mein safal nahi huwa to use dusre raah ki or jaana chahiye. Humein duniya ke saath saath chalna chahiye. Har aadmi apne kiye huwe karmo ka phal yahi bhogta hai. Kaam karte karte bahut se kathinaiya aati hai.’

Incidentally, Kandhari has been known to be trigger-happy even in the past. At the time of the incident, Kandhari’s wife and two children were not at home.

Kandhari’s Swaraj Group has nine ongoing projects across Navi Mumbai and Govandi. The projects completed by him were either single-building or twin-building projects. However, the Wakdi township was his most ambitious project.”He was developing a township project named Swaraj Lagoona at Wakdi near Panvel, but had suffered huge losses.
