Recently, fire erupted in an office at Big Splash commercial complex at sec 17, Vashi which has once again brought violations of fire safety norms into light. NMTV has time and again voiced concerns about the violations of fire safety norms by commercial complexes in the city. Fears came true when fire erupted in Big Splash commercial complex at sec 17, Vashi burning down an entire office. Fire safety officers stood helpless not able to reach the spot due to encroachment at the entrance of the complex and no fire exits. Trying to cool down the fire, the Chief Fire Officer, R T Mhatre was also injured during the incident. Big Splash is an epicenter of violations. One reason why the building failed to get an Occupancy Certificate from NMMC. The building has grave violations of both fire safety and could never procure an OC for the simple reason that its builder did not provide parking space for 110 vehicles. due to which there is a permanent bottle-neck in the area. The same was reiterated by a resident of Vashi, Sandeep Thakur in an interview with NMTV. However since the influential names of the commercial sector of Navi Mumbai have their offices at Big Splash, till date no Commissioner has had the courage to seal Big Splash. A trailer of what awaits at Big Splash due to the NMMC administration’s inaction is not difficult to imagine. If they do not take the helplessness of its fire brigade team headed by their chief to combat a small incident of fire at Big Splash seriously, they alone will be responsible if a big disaster was to take place.
