Keeping in mind the increasing cases of accidents on Highways, the Navi Mumbai police have started a drive against private vehicles, trailers and auto rickshaws driven rashly. Sudhir Sharma met with the RTO officer and tells us more on the drive. Accidents have increased in the city on an alarming rate. The fateful accident that occurred on the Mumbai Pune Expressway near Kalamboli sent shock waves across the city. To combat the ever-increasing number of accidents, Navi Mumbai police have initiated a drive in zone I and zone II areas. It is being seen that on highways accidents, unclaimed bodies, traffic jams, hooliganism by drunkards and smuggling of liquor are some of the common occurrences. According to statistics, the Sion-Panvel Highway has seen more than 200 accidents in four months in which, more than 300 lives were lost and several persons were injured. The drive that mainly targeted highways and busy roads such as Palm Beach Road and Kalamboli circle has generated a total revenue of about Rs 1.26 lakh. Even auto rickshaw drivers are targeted by the RTO department. Cases have been registered against 700 auto rickshaw drivers, having faulty meters. They have been sealed and serious action has been taken against 200 auto rickshaw drivers. Out of this, 125 auto rickshaws have been seized by the department.
