A 1977-batch officer, Sanjeev Dayal has been elevated afternoon in a surprise move; as was his predecessor D Sivanandhan who was promoted the state director general of police (DGP) after merely eleven months as Mumbai CP. Sanjeev Dayal is the new Mumbai CP. Two day ago chief minister Ashok Chavan had publicly thrown his weight behind Hasan Gafoor’s candidature for the DGP’s post after AN Roy retired. However, sudden announcement follows a weekend of hectic political negotiations between Congress and coalition partner the Nationalist Congress Party which controls the home ministry. The Congress’s quid pro quo for overlooking Hasan Gafoor for DG was the appointment of a new commissioner of police who has no known political links. In fact, Dayal who was heading special ops, had returned to service only in February after a year-long study leave. Sources say it’s rare for an office at that level to opt for study leave and the impetus behind Dayal’s leave of absence was his fatigue with the group-ism within the state IPS circles. The highlight of his career until now remains his seven-year stint in the Special Protection Group. Bureau report – NMTV News.
