The Bandra-Worli Sea Link is set to topple the most recognisable Mumbai symbol-the Gateway of India-from its exalted status. The MTNL is planning to replace the Gateway of India symbol on its telephone directory for Mumbai with the sea link. Civic circles feel this is a major change as it signifies a shift from a monument built to commemorate the British monarch, George V, and wife Queen Mary’s visit to the city in 1911 with a bridge which is considered to be the most significant city structure built after Independence in 1947. MSRDC officials said they would grant in-principle permission for the picture of the bridge to be used as a symbol, provided the MTNL used MSRDC’s logo with it. MSRDC officials said even corporate firms had approached them for use of the symbol on their products.
