The seamless travel scheme, which enables people to use smart cards in the city and suburbs to travel both in BEST and Central railway suburban trains, will soon be extended to the whole Mumbai metropolitan region. Smart Cards that help commuters experience a seamless travel in the city and suburbs in BEST and Central Railway Suburban trains will soon be extended to the whole MMRDA region. The move will benefit commuters who live in the surrounding towns of Mumbai region, including Thane, Navi Mumbai, Kalyan and Dombivli. Principal Secretary of Urban Development Department, T Benjamin has said that talks are being held with the municipal corporations of these smaller towns to enable their bus networks to mesh with the railways. The Go-Mumbai smart card by Kaizen, which is in use for BEST buses and CR trains, has proved to be very popular. According to BEST statistics, the scheme has crossed over 5 lakh users. The state’s goal is to have seamless travel between BEST, WR and CR, Metro rail and monorail. City planners said a new element in the seamless travel scheme is the inclusion of taxis.
