And not just Thane but looks like even the Shiv Sena BJP may romp Kalyan seat. Its advantage Shiv Sena BJP candidate Anand Paranjpe in the Kalyan constituency. The new constituency of Kalyan carved out of Thane comprises of cities and townships like Dombivli, Ambernath, Ulhasnagar and Mumbra-Kalwa among others with a voter population of 15.80 lakh. Maharashtrians comprise more than 50 per cent of the total voters but this constituency is, in a way replica of Mumbai, and does wear a cosmopolitan look. The voting percentage registered in Kalyan constituency is nearly 40%. Shiv Sena-BJP alliance fielded young Anand Paranjpe, son of late Prakash Paranjpe who had also won the Thane seat earlier. After the demise of Prakash Paranjpe, Anand Paranjpe won the by-election held in 2008 by over 90,000 votes. Shiv Sena-BJP can look forward to making sizeable gains from areas like Dombivli, Kalyan and Ambernath while Ulhasnagar could prove to be difficult. But it will be Mumbra with a very large Muslim presence that could pose the toughest challenge for the saffron alliance. Nationalist Congress Party’s Vasant Davkhare, deputy chairman of State Legislative Council had started campaigning in this constituency even before the Congress-NCP was to declare its seat-sharing arrangement. He had put up a formidable performance in 2004 elections and lost by a narrow margin. This time Vasant Dhaukhare would be banking on Muslim votes from Mumbra. Bahujan Samaj Party has fielded a Muslim candidate trying to cash in on Muslim votes. But it is likely that the Muslims would vote for a candidate who is more likely to defeat the BJP. Hence, in Mumbra Muslims are likely to vote for Davkhare. However, this number might still not counter the lead that Anand Paranjpe will garner in the other areas. Moreover, the Vasant Dhavkhare CD controversy expose has caused serious damage to Vasant Dhavkhare’s campaigning and has benefited Anand Paranjpe hugely. Anand Paranjpe’s clean, boyish image his father’s good will and work in the constituency, the staunch support from the Brahmin community will win over Vasant Dhavkhare making it advantage Shiv-Sena BJP even in the Kalyan constituency.
