A delegation led by Shiv Sena MLC Neelam Gorhe met chief minister Ashok Chavan to highlight the need for a gender-responsive budget for the socio-economic uplift of women in the state. Talking to reporters after meeting the chief minister, Shiv Sena MLC Neelam Gorhe stressed on the need for the state government to focus the upcoming budget on women’s development issues including prevention of female infanticide, setting up of district family courts, health, education and rehabilitation of destitute women. She said the delegation asked the state government to rehabilitate widows of martyrs who laid down their lives while fighting Naxalites in the state. Gorhe said the government should provide for education of their children and housing. Gorhe noted that incidence of crime against women had risen in 2007-08 and 91.65%of the cases are pending in different courts across the state. She also felt that a budgetary provision of Rs2 crore should be made to strengthen the state women’s commission. Bureau report NMTV News.
