NMTV exit polls came true as Sena won both seats at Airoli by-elections with Vijay Chougule winning Chinchpada with a thumping majority. The counting took place at Gaurav Mhatre Kala Kendra. NMMC Commissioner Vijay Nahata was the presiding official for the counting. In ward no. 2 Ramnagar, Sena’s Kishore Gaikar won with 1918 votes. NCP candidate Gopal Mahale got 1349 votes making the victory margin of votes 569. On the other hand, in ward no. 7 Chinchpada, Sena’s Vijay Chougule won with 3468 votes. NCP candidate Anil Gavte got 1224 votes making the victory margin of votes 2244. Both the winning candidates were declared corporators by the Returning Officer P R Rokde in the presence of Commissioner Vijay Nahata and DMC Amrish Patnigire. After their defeat, disappointed local NCP leaders Bharat Nakhate and J D Sutar had this to say. And much need not be said about what prevailed among Shiv Sainiks both inside the hall and outside on the roads. Vijay Chougule – the man for whom the elections was a do or die situation voiced his jubilation to the media. While the Sena relished in its victory, there is no doubt that winning wasn’t easy for the Sena. The NCP under the intensive campaigning of their Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik and first mayor Sanjeev Naik have managed to create a dent in Vijay Chougule’s vote bank, which can be seen in the form of over 1000 votes garnered by NCP in both wards. Specifically in Chinchpada, where Chougules have won past elections unopposed. On the other hand for the Sena, the victory in the by-elections is resurgence of the Sena in Navi Mumbai under their new found leader Vijay Chougule besides giving birth to what could be a strong opposition in NMMC.
