SHOP KEEPERS AT POWAI HASSLED BY MMRDA

Redevelopment-3With the aid from the World Bank, MMRDA had redeveloped the shops situated at Powai. But unfortunately, today while the owners have concrete shops, they lack the basic amenities and ownership rights. This is the area at Powai where MMRDA with the help from the World Bank developed a mall, the Powai Plaza Mall. The mall replaced the small shops that were here earlier and the shop owners were given shops in the mall. However, today the shop keepers lack the basic amenities that should have been provided to them. They allege that there was immense corruption done by the MMRDA officials while allotting the shops to them leading to one person owning many shops. No light in the passage, no water supply and leakage in the shops are some of the basic issues that the shop keepers have to face. There are around 350 shop keepers running their business here but only 7 have been given ownership rights over the shops till now. Speaking to NMTV News, they alleged that this was a nexus being played by the MMRDA officials so that they vacate the shops and shut business. The mall was developed by a company owned by the popular Hiranandani Group. The pathetic conditions have forced some of the shop owners to shut shop while some are pained by the beer shops and hukka parlors that have opened up here. Several complaints were also filed with MMRDA but the shop owners are yet to receive any response on the same. With cameraperson Sadanand Shetty, Sunil Sharma for NMTV News.
