Under the name of widening of a drain, MCGM has demolished 200 slum dwellings claiming it to be illegal at Bhimwadi in Jogeshwari rendering the slum dwellers homeless. These slum dwellings had mostly rag pickers who sold the litter they picked from the streets for their livelihood. These settlements even have important documents like water bill, electricity bill, photo pass, voting cards and others but despite this MCGM went ahead demolishing the slums under the modified law of Maharashtra Slums Act of 1971. Many allege that the reason MCGM demolished their houses were because they wanted to carry out another development project in the area that of widening of drains. It maybe recalled that the then Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh had announced that extension of rehabilitation of slums built till the year 2000. Despite this, these slum dwellers have not been provided with any rehabilitation before rendering them homeless. The residents allege that they have been only given voters card but the basic amenities have not been provided to them. With cameraperson Mehboob Dhanse, Hansraj Kanaujia for NMTV news.
