BMC PREPARES LIST OF OVER 1,000 RELIGIOUS PLACES THAT MAY SOON BE DEMARCATED AS SILENCE ZONES While hearing three different petitions, the Mumbai High Court had asked the State why places of worship had not been declared Silence Zones even though the Central Government notification dated November 22, 2000, clearly said they must be included. The MCGM has now prepared the list of 1,313 religious places to declare as Silence Zones. Sources say the list has been approved by a committee – headed by Principal Secretary (Home) and comprising officials from BMC, Mumbai Police and Maharashtra Pollution Control Board – which was formed following an HC directive. However, while MCGM has demarcated the areas of silence zones, MCGM Commissioner Dr. Jairaj Pathak has stated that it is not the responsibility of the civic body to maintain the noise pollution levels in these zones. STATE GOVERNMENT’S MOBILE VAN SERVICE AVAILABLE FOR SWINEFLU A three-unit mobile van service has been introduced by MCGM, which will tour the slums and densely populated areas. Additional MCGM commissioner Manisha Patankar informed that the mobile van has been distributed among three different places, which will give door to door service to the citizens. With this multi facilitated mobile van more than 38 thousand people have been screened so far and 44 have been given the dose of Tamiflu.
