Be ready to face stringent action if you do not comply with fire safety norms. The Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act, 2006, that has come into force from last month, has made it mandatory for buildings to have firefighting equipment and take adequate fire safety measures. Non-compliance could lead to imprisonment or a fine of Rs 25000. It has been made mandatory for buildings to have essential fire-fighting equipment like fire extinguisher, a hose reel, an automatic sprinkler and a tank storing adequate water to douse a fire. We tried to speak with the Chief Fire Officer at the Vashi Fire Brigade on this mandatory norm. However, he informed that the final draft on this matter was yet to be issued and only after that could he give the specifics.
