SOCIETY DEBATE OVER STATE’S DECISION TO LEGALIZE LIVE IN RELATIONSHIPS

In a bold step to “legalise” live-in relationships, Maharashtra cabinet has approved a proposal suggesting a woman involved in such a relationship for a “reasonable period” should get the status of a wife. The proposal was passed at a meeting of the state cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. Looks like someone in the state cabinet is inspired by Salaam Namastey – the movie that justifies and projects live in relationships in positive light. The recent changes in the law against domestic violence promise equal benefits to women who are in live-in relationships. In simple terms, this means live-ins now get official stamp of recognition and women live-in partners get legal rights – just like wives. We spoke with the principals of city colleges to know what they thought about the decision. However, the majority of the youth of the city have a totally different opinion. Live-in relationships are cool and hip but now it also means serious business. So much so, that even the Government has been forced to take cognizance of these relationships. So for those of you who believed that living together before marriage is akin to taking a car for a test drive – it still stands true. Except that now, you’ll also have to pay for any damages.
