It is a month of festivals and another that commenced recently was the Marathon 2009 and Malhar Mahotsav. The inauguration of the Mahotsav was done at the hands of former MP Ramsheth Thakur at Panvel Municipal ground. With the aim to promote the local talents and players in Panvel, Panvel Municipal Council held a Marathon 2009 and Malhar Mahotsav at the Council’s ground. Before the event began, tribute was paid to the martyrs of the Mumbai terror attack who would never be forgotten. The Mahotsav was then inaugurated at the hands of former MP Ramsheth Thakur. The competition saw kids of 5 years of age to senior citizens of 60 years participating in the event. The marathon was run for 2 km, 8km, 11km and 21km. The winners of the marathon were awarded at the hands of Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Ramrao Wagh. Also present to congratulate the students were corporators and social workers. The winner in the 21km marathon was Manoj Bala Mhatre who was awarded a cash prize of Rs 25000 and a certificate. The winner of 11km Neelam Kadam of Uran Gymkhana won Rs 11,111. The Panvel Municipal Council has been organizing such marathons and competitions for the last three years. We spoke with the President of the Panvel Municipal Council, Prashant Thakur to know more. The Mahotsav is not just about sports but also cultural programmes like dance, singing, drama and much more.
