State appoints panel to study usage of salt pans for affordable housing

Responding during the winter session of the state assembly being held in Nagpur, housing minister Prakash Mehta said that the state was looking at possibilities of utilising salt pans to provide affordable housing under SRA scheme. He said that the state has appointed a panel to study how these salt pans can be used.
Prakash Mehta was replying to a question from Dr Balaji Kinikar, MLA from Ambarnath in Thane district. He further wrote that the follow up is being done with the Centre which owns the land.
“The government has appointed the principal secretary (revenue department) as coordinator to deal with salt pan-related issues with other departments and the Union government. In August 2015, the state forest and revenue department issued a GR saying that a committee has been formed under the chief secretary to develop salt pan land,” said Mehta.
