The government approved the climate change action plan prepared by the environment department during the state cabinet meeting held recently. Environment Secretary, government of Maharashtra Valsa Nair said that the climate change has become a serious cause of concern and that it was high time that it was acted upon. The action plan was prepared by the department with this same objective. The average global temperature has gone up by 0.76C during the last few decades. According to estimation, it is likely to increase by 1.4C to 3C by the end of the year 2100, Nair said. The sea level rise has been recorded at 0.17 metre and it is projected to rise between 9 and 88 cm, she added. The level of carbon dioxide, the main constituent of the green house gas, has increased by 70% from 1970 to 2004. The government is hopeful that the study will help in increased use of non-conventional energy resources, conservation of environment through participation of rural population and increase in green cover to create carbon sink, she added.
