STATE FACES ANOTHER DROUGHT AS RAINS PLAY HIDE AND SEEK

drought1An elusive monsoon continues to keep Maharashtra on tenterhooks as water levels in the state’s reservoirs did not show much improvement until July 8, and 100 of the total 355 tehsils in the state reported just 20-40% of their average rainfall. Availability of water in 2,243 reservoirs across the state was only 11% of their capacity as against 21% in 2008 and 35% in 2007 during the corresponding period. Rainfall has been between 20-40% in 77 tehsils and between 40% and 60% in 102 tehsils. Only 63 tehsils have recorded between 60% and 80% of their average rainfall. On the plus side, however, 52 tehsils have recorded better than 80% rainfall and 41 have got in excess of their average rainfall. The data put out by the irrigation department say the dams had only 3,616 million cubic metres water against their optimum project capacity of 33,149 MCM.
