State government is expecting a loss of Rs100 crore due to the cyclone in the four districts of the Konkan region. The loss assessed so far by the state administration is Rs40 crore, including Rs20 crore of the damage to the crops. All the four districts in the Konkan belt — Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Raigad and Thane — have been hit by the cyclone and heavy rains in past three days. According to the disaster management cell, four persons have died and 14 injured, while more than 150 have gone missing. A rescue operation for the 29 boats that have gone missing in the sea is undertaken by the Coast Guard. Chief minister Ashok Chavan held a meeting with senior ministers and officials from relief and rehabilitation, finance and disaster management departments and directed them to speed up the procedure of distribution of the compensation. The paddy, banana crops are damaged on the large number with the estimated loss, after the assessment so far, is more that Rs 19.58 crore. The loss to the public properties, such as school buildings, electric polls, government establishments, is Rs 17 crore.
