STATE FINANCE DEPT COLLECTS RS. 212 CRORE FROM SALES TAX DEFAULTERS

veltax-1The State Sales Dept. might have gone easy on VAT tax defaulters in 2007 but it has changes its stance this year. The department has started an aggressive campaign against the defaulters this year and collected Rs. 212 Crore from defaulters while cases against 550 defaulters have filed by the department. State Finance Minister Jayant Patil informed the press and media that the state sales dept, under a special campaign, has booked 660 merchants of the iron, marble, computer, paper, plywood, gold silver and others for evading tax. The Minister informed the media that the defaulters did not pay sales tax for a business of Rs. 2300 Crore and for the same the dept has collected Rs. 212 Crore as penalty. The Minister gave an insight how the tax are evaded by merchants. The dept. has also started several facilities to make tax payments easier and comfortable. The State Finance Dept’s Sales Tax Commissioner made a presentation for the media on how the department is working on improving its performance. While the collection of Rs. 212 Crore from 660 defaulters is an achievement for the State Finance Dept is also exposes how that this is just the tip of the ice berg.
