Not united but most merchants in Meera Bhayander were on a strike for five days that was finally called off after the state assured to scrap Octroi. NMTV News Correspodent Hansraj Kanojia spoke to merchants. The merchants at Meera Bhayander, most of them, were on a strike. Merchants of various associations participated in the strike that was called off after 5 days when the merchants received and assurance from the state that octroi will be scrapped. The bone of contention was that the contractor authorized to collect cess viz. Konark Infrastructure’s term had ended on June 20. This was however extended to 31st July. The merchants were opposing the extension period demanding that as promised by the state the octroi should be scrapped. On the fifth day of the protest, the police arrested a few merchants and association members who were forcing other merchants to shut shop.
