The state and MCGM have decided to recognise illegal extensions made by tenants in old and dilapidated buildings in the island city in order to raise the development stakes of these buildings, most among which are in dilapidated conditions. The urban development department has directed the municipal corporation to amend development control regulations to permit inclusion of the area occupied by mezzanine floors, illegally constructed by the tenants in the FSI calculations, while charting their development. The rehabilitation area and the FSI for rehabilitation of the existing tenants of these buildings would increase by an amount equivalent to the area covered by illegal mezzanine extensions made in the flats in these buildings.
