The state is ready with the new rules for schools buses. With so much controversies surrounding the issue for months now, the news comes as relief for harried parents of the state. State Transport Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil has said that the new policy for school buses may be finalized by next week. The department has forwarded the rules to the Education department for a final review so that they have an approval from all departments concerned before going ahead. The guidelines will then be placed before the cabinet this week. Once in force the new policy will override all circulars and notices sent by schools to parents until now, Transport Minister Vikhe-Patil has said. The government has been under pressure to come out with a police for safe school bus travel after a school bus ferrying 22 students of Changukana Thakur School in New Panvel, went up in flames because of a short circuit. Six children died. Less than four months later, a DPS school bus collided with another bus on Palm Beach Road again in Navi Mumbai. Nine students and two teachers were injured. These two incidents woke u the state transport dept. that started working on the policy.
