The state government stayed the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commissions’ decision to slash the power tariff for malls, multiplexes and builders while hiking it for domestic consumers and public water works users by an average of four per cent with effect from August 1. The rationale behind MERCs move was ostensibly to reduce the cross-subsidization of power. However, State Energy Minister Sunil Tatkare told that the government was forced to intervene, as MERC had not taken everything into consideration before taking such a major decision. The commission should have drafted a policy and invited suggestions before taking this drastic step, he said. The stay will continue till the commission drafts a new policy and gives a satisfactory reply to the state government. This is the second time in less than two months that the state government has stayed MERCs order; in July, it stayed the permission granted to Reliance Energy to hike its tariff.
