Officials of Nobel Prize winner Dr Rajendra Pachauri’s The Energy Resources Institute (TERI) have come forward to save the disappearing water bodies of Navi Mumbai. Under this CIDCO has signed a memorandum of understanding with TERI for setting up an environment resource centre (ERC) in Panvel to prepare a comprehensive plan for wetlands. The Environment Resource Centre will work on the preservation of nearly 100 fresh-water lakes across Thane and Raigad’s urban areas falling under the Mumbai metropolitan region. The work on the same has begun in terms of designing and planning with work already starting on the two-hectare Khandeshwar lake on the expressway. This lake will be developed on the lines of lakes in Finland or the Sukhna lake in Chandigarh. We spoke to some of the locals who welcomed the step by CIDCO and stated that development was the need of the hour. Construction of pathways, a lake-side cafeteria, installation of garbage bins, stone benches, landscaping, botanical gardens are some of the facilities are to come up here with CIDCO estimating a cost of Rs 3.5 crore.
