State to set up rescue centre for washed up mammals

With the number of mammals washing up on the state’s coastal lines, the state is coming up with a plan to set up rescue centre for these species.

The plane would also include connecting with the residents of coastal districts to train them so that they can handle the marine species and to develop a network with residents to monitor sightings and report such stranded marine mammals.

At least three marine mammals have beached in a little over a month. Along Mumbai and coastal districts of Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, the state has a coastline measuring nearly 720km marked by the presence of estuaries and creeks.
