SWINE FLU SCARE MAKES INDEPENDENCE DAY CELBERATIONS A LOW KEY AFFAIR

kokan2Under the cover of the swine flu scare, Independence Day 2009 became a rather low-key affair in the city. Nonetheless every celebration was full of fervor, ardent devotion and immense patriotism. MANTRALAYA CELEBRATIONS Under the swine flu scare, the 62nd Independence Day was celebrated across the city. The state’s ceremony was held at Mantralaya where Chief Minister Ashok Chavan hoisted the national flag. Chief Secretary Johnny Joseph Mumbai Police Commissioner D Sivanandan were also present during the ceremony. NCP HEAD OFFICE At NCP HQ in South Mumbai, former Dy. Chief Minister R R Patil hoisted the flag in the presence of other NCP office bearers and party workers. MCGM At MCGM, Mumbai Mayor Dr. Shubha Raul hoisted the national flag. MCGM Addtl. Commissioner R A Rajeev and other officials and public representatives were present during the ceremony. COLLECTOR EVENTS At the Thane Collector’s Office, Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik hoisted the flag in the presence of Thane Collector A Jharhad and Thane CP Anil Dhere. Civilians, students, freedom fighters were honored at the hands of Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik for their noteworthy contributions. THANE MUNICIPAL CORPORATION Thane Mayor Smita Indulkar hoisted the flag at the Thane Municipal Corporation in the presence of Municipal Commissioner Nandkumar Jantre. NAVI MUMBAI POLICE HQ In Navi Mumbai, the national flag was first hoisted at the Navi Mumbai Police Commissionerate. DCP Zone 1 Pratap Digaonkar, DCP HQ N D Chauhan and DCP Ashok Dudhe hoisted the flag here. KONKAN BHAVAN At Konkan Bhavan, State Minister for Home Naseem Khan hoisted the national flag. The flag was hoisted in the presence of Konkan Commissioner S S Sandhu. CIDCO, NMMC and Navi Mumbai Police officials joined the celebrations at Konkan Bhavan. CIDCO BHAVAN At CIDCO HQ, Chairman Nakul Patil hoisted the flag in the presence of CIDCO MD G S Gill and Jt. MD Dilip Jadhav. NMMC Navi Mumbai’s 1st citizen Anjani Bhoir hoisted the flag at the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation. Dy. Mayor Shashikant Birajdar and Commissioner Vijay Nahata were also present during the ceremony. NMMC KK WARD OFFICE NMMC Standing Committee Chairman Sandeep Naik hoisted the national flag at the KK ward office. MULUND FLAG HOISTING CEREMONY Every year the citizens of Mulund E hold a flag hoisting ceremony at 12 in the night at Sambhaji Grounds. This year of 26 / 11 slain constable Umbale’s daughter Vaishali Umbale hoisted the flag. Also present was another victim late Police Inspector Prakash More’s wife Madhavi More who lighted the Amar Jyot to pay tribute to the victims of Mumbai terror attacks. T S RAHAMAN Dressed in white, hundreds of students and teachers gathered at the grounds of T S Rahaman to participate in the flag hoisting ceremony at Nhava. The flag hoisting ceremony was performed at the hands of ONGC Group GM at Nhava A K Agrawal in the presence of T S Rahaman Group’s Chairman Rasheed Yusuf. The ceremony also the saw participation of Capt. Superintendent Najib Peshimam and Brigadier Adhikari. Unfortunately, the state’s continuous directives on swine flu scare ended up in robbing the spirit of Independence Day celebrations especially for city schools that remained shut on the day. However, despite the swine flu scare, one did see many acknowledging the sacrifices of freedom fighters by participating with patriotic fervor in ID celebrations across the city.
