vInitiating the first step towards a new development vision for Thane, Mayor Ashok Vaity held consultations with officials of the United Nations Development Programme, seeking their expertise in urban planning and disaster management. Thane Mayor Ashok Vaity, in an effort to check on the infrastructure of Thane, called on the three member, United Nations Development Programme team and briefed them about the rapid transformation of Thane from farm township into a major industrial hub and now a bustling metropolis with a population of over 19 lakhs. The massive migration in Thane has led to pollution, congestion and inadequate services due to the rising population. Mayor Ashok Vaity spoke more on his meeting with the foreign delegation on Thane infrastructure. The delegation was present in Bhiwandi to study the inadequate infrastructure problem in the region. Mayor Vaity has said that he would take up the issue of preparing a HDI for Thane.
