The Electrical Department of the Thane Municipal Corporation has gone ahead with its ambitious proposal to put the entire civic administrative building on solar power. while the exercise was costly, once started, it will enable the corporation to become the first ever civic body in the entire country to operate its headquarters on solar power alone. The Thane Municipal Corporation seems to be setting unique examples recently. After declaring 22 spots of hoardings for displaying civic messages, the corporation is all set to become the first civic administration to operate its headquarters on solar power alone. The TMC General Body had passed a proposal worth around Rs 1.36 crore for the erection of a solar power plant exclusively for use of the civic headquarters. The Electrical department of TMC went to work and short listed an experienced contractor to carry out the project for it. Today, the TMC Headquarters proudly stands with solar panels which will be functional in a few days to run its electricity on solar energy. The TMC HQ requires more than 65,000 watts of electricity per year to operate its non AC appliances. The project is capable of generating around the same quantity of power to meet the current demand. The project would run the fans, tube-lights and other electrical items in the civic main building except the ACs. The corporation has made available the open terrace of the civic headquarters for the ambitious project. Although the terrace is vast in size, only a portion of the terrace is used to put up the 50 Kilo Volt solar power generation plant. The solar panels have been put on top of the terrace which comprises of several Photo Electric cells. These cells would produce electricity from the solar power and pass them on to batteries where the generated power would be stored. The power would then be used to run the entire electrical system in the TMC administrative office. Despite having to spend more on generation of solar power, TMC is proud that it is set to become the first ever civic body in the entire country to operate upon non conventional energy based power project for its major captive consumption. Now corporations like NMMC and MCGM should take lesson from TMC and incorporate solar energy for power in their premises. From Thane, Manoj Singh for NMTV News.
