The poor at Digha’s slum settlements are paying a price for being poor. This is the first thought that comes to the mind if you will see the inhuman condition people are living in. Archana Tripathi reports how filthy water of drains has reached doors of homes at Digha, courtesy NMMC apathy. The first impression of Navi Mumbai is a clean and green city. But this beauty is but skin deep. There is an ugly side to this city, which is seen in the slum settlements in the Digha’s Ganesh Nagar and Ambedkar Nagar. Thousands of poor live in these settlements. At one time the place was nothing like what you see but today it is lined with garbage and filth creating the most inhuman conditions. Locals say that they have been waiting patiently expecting NMMC to clean the mess with monsoon round the corner, but they were wrong. The NMMC contractor doing the road construction in the area has dumped debris in the drainage for months that has resulted in filthy drain water coming out on roads and next to the doors of the poor. With the settlements being on the foothill of the hills, rainwater during monsoons flows into the drains and prevent flooding. But this year a nightmare awaits locals during monsoons. Every year, rain water enters the home of locals but this year the situation is worse than the ever. NMMC has paid no heed to local’s appeals time and again. Had the drain been in a posh locality, the local corporators and municipal officials would have been more attentive to resident’s woes but at Digha, the cries of the poor begin and end within the settlements.
