There have been grave allegations and accusations being made in the Navi Mumbai International Airport project. Activists say that that the reason why the Union Aviation Ministry is ignoring all environment and technical concerns is because politicians have invested in thousands of Crores in land near the airport site in Navi Mumbai. MP Dr. Sanjeev Naik – who has been very closely following the matter with the center, however says that these allegations and accusations are baseless and false. It was during the social activists meet in Kharghar that for the first time allegations of this nature came to light. Noted counsel Y P Singh had said that a major bottleneck for not shifting the airport site from Navi Mumbai is that politicians have invested in land around the airport site and it is their commercial interests that the Union Aviation Ministry is allegedly protecting. Debi Goenka too had endorsed these allegations that there are many politicians, who have their own personal interest at stake here. However MP Dr. Sanjeev Naik refutes these allegations and accusations. MP Dr. Sanjeev Naik has been taking up the matter of the Navi Mumbai International Airport project with his senior party leader and Union Aviation Minister Praful Patel. He was also a part of the delegation that made the presentation in front of Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to ask his cabinet colleague and Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh to give the environment clearance to Navi Mumbai Intl. Airport project. Speaking to NMTV News he spoke about the difference of opinion between the Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh and Union Aviation Minister Praful Patel on the project. He went on to add that there needs to be a balance drawn between environment and development. MP Dr. Sanjeev Naik said that there are technologies being used in construction of international airport world over that made construction of airports even within the sea a possibility. And when we asked him about the allegations and accusations of activists that it was politicians investment in land around the airport that the Union Aviation Ministry was safeguarding and not environment and public interest, on this the MP refuted the allegations stating that this was completely false and baseless allegations. He said that the Right of Information could be used to prove that indeed, there is no political commercial interest in sites around the Navi Mumbai International Airport.
